Preakness Stakes Betting Odds 2020 Preview - Can Authentic score another leg of the Triple Crown?

Horse Racing Betting

Preakness Stakes Betting Odds 2020 Preview: The 145th edition of the Preakness Stakes will get its running on Saturday, October 3rd. This is the final leg of the American Triple Crown.

This is a delayed running of the race as it usually happens a couple of weeks following the Kentucky Derby in May.

But this year it has been pushed back to this October start after the 2020 Kentucky Derby was run in early September.

There is no Triple Crown title on the cards for this year anyway, following Tiz The Law collecting the Belmont Stakes and then getting upset in the Kentucky Derby by Authentic.

Here is our 2020 Preakness Stakes Betting Preview 2020

Preakness Stakes Race Info

The Preakness Stakes, which has the long nickname of “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” is hosted at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.

This is the first time in its history that it has not been hosted in its regular slot of the third weekend of May.

In fact, the Preakness is usually the middle leg of the American Triple Crown, but this year it has been pushed to the back of the pack.

It also means that horses who are usually primed for the run in the middle of the year have had to alter and change their schedules because of the postponement.

That adds a whole new twist on things.

The running of this year’s Preakness Stakes will also be the first one ever with no spectators in place.

The Preakness is the shortest distance of the American Triple Crown legs at 9.5 furlongs.

2019 Preakness Stakes Review

Last year’s Preakness was won by War Of Will, scoring at Pimlico having finished down the field in seventh at the Kentucky Derby.

There was nearly $1m wagered on the Preakness racecard (fourteen races) last year, a new record for the event.

War of Will got his win last year by one and quarter lengths over Everfast, getting the job done from a 4/1 SP

ART COLLECTOR

Preakness Stakes betting odds on the favourite

With the absence of TIZ THE LAW, who takes a pass after being a beaten favourite at the Kentucky Derby, it leaves the Derby winner AUTHENTIC as the outright favourite for Saturday’s big race.

Authentic is the current 6/4 favourite to get the win at Pimlico on Saturday* (odds taken 02:13 GMT Thursday, 1st October).

But will the Kentucky Derby success put Authentic at a disadvantage for this run at the Preakness?

Maybe, because history is, by and large, against him.

The last time that a horse won only the final two legs of the Triple Crown was Afleet Alex in 2005 and he remains only the second to do it since 2000.

Usually, the final two legs of the American Triple Crown are the Preakness and the Belmont.

Interestingly if you just look at the Preakness/Kentucky Derby double (ignoring positions) then that double has been achieved (not counting Triple Crown-winning years) six times since 2000.

California Chrome was the last to do the Preakness/Kentucky Derby double in 2014.

After his impressive run at the Kentucky Derby though, Authentic is heading up the market as the current 6/4 favourite* (odds taken 02:13 GMT Thursday, 1st October).

The 2020 Preakness Stakes Post Draw

The draw for a place in the stalls is all-important to gain position on the oval track. The middle spots are generally the best, but then preferences is towards an inside draw.

Post Horse Jockey
1 Excession Sheldon Russell
2 Mr. Big News Gabriel Saez
3 Art Collector Brian Hernandez Jr.
4 Swiss Skydiver Robby Albarado
5 Thousand Words Florent Geroux
6 Jesus’ Team Jevian Toledo
7 NY Traffic Horacio Karamanos
8 Max Player Paco Lopez
9 Authentic John Velazquez
10 Pneumatic Joe Bravo
11 LiveYourBeastLife Trevor McCarthy

As can be seen from the Post draw for the Preakness Stakes 2020, the favourite Authentic is pulling from stall 9.

His connections seemed happy with his final warm up workouts which were done at Churchill Downs this week, clocking some good times in speedwork for trainer Bob Baffert.

Famous trainer Buffets has won two of the last five editions of the Preakness.

He did it with American Pharoah in 2015 and then Justify in 2018, both of which went on to claim the Triple Crown in the respective years.

Art Collector a big threat in Preakness Stakes Betting Odds

There is more than one horse in focus of course for Preakness betting odds 2020. Looking like the big main threat to the favourite is ART COLLECTOR.

He is certainly an interesting player here having been kept out of the Kentucky Derby this year because of a minor injury.

But he is on a five-race winning streak at the moment.

The notable thing about the last two that he has been successful in, is that they have also featured fellow Triple Crown runners.

That was Swiss Skydiver in the Blue Grass Stakes and three others then in the Ellis Park Derby in August.

So his form is right there and he is the 5/2 second-favourite* (odds taken 02:13 GMT Thursday, 1st October).

The interesting thing here is that Art Collector goes from stall three which will give him a great chance to get a jump on Authentic who goes from a wider stall.

He could be that much fresher too not having taken part at Churchill Downs.

A fast start is going to be all-important for anyone taking on Authentic, who will likely have the finishing speed to hold off anyone who is trying to chase him down at the finish.

Last year, all but two of the top six finishers of the Preakness had come inside post positions.

Thousand Words a contender for Preakness success?

This is another of Bob Baffert’s entries. Thousand Words sharpened himself up with a success at Del Mar in early August in the Shared Belief Stakes.

He didn’t take part in either of the other legs of this year’s Triple Crown so he is bringing a bit of an unknown variable to the table.

Thousand Words was set to go in the Derby but was scratched late in the day.

The fact that Baffert is throwing him in action here suggests that he sees something more than just a horse that will fill out the numbers.

There’s not a bad draw for Thousand Words either who goes from Post 5, a position which has seen a couple of winners since 2008.

Interesting Post positions for Swiss Skydiver and Ny Traffic

Simply looking at post positions, SWISS SKYDIVER won’t be too happy with her place going from Post 4.

Not one winner has come from that stall since Curlin managed to score in 2007.

Looking back at the extended history, there have been just 13 winners of the Preakness before from stall 4.

As for NY TRAFFIC he could be in the best spot from stall 7.

Since 1989 there have been six wins of the Preakness from there, which is roughly a 20% strike rate and something to be noted.

In the Preakness Stakes betting odds 2020, filly Swiss Skydiver is at 7/1 while Ny Times is out at a much bigger quote of 16/1* (odds taken 02:13 GMT Thursday, 1st October).

Mr Big News the best outside shot?

From a quote of 16/1 MR BIG NEWS could be the pick of the each-way options in Preakness Stakes betting odds 2020* (odds taken 02:13 GMT Thursday, 1st October).

He was a surprising third-place finisher at the Kentucky Derby behind Authentic and Tiz The Law.

Mr Big News really made the most of a favourable inside draw for the race and he will be that much better for such a good experience.

His connections too have sounded pleased with the speed that he has been showing in the build up for Saturday.

Preakness Stakes Betting Odds 2020 Predictions

It is worth remembering that AUTHENTIC won the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs from way out wide in stall 18.

That was some effort from him to get himself into the frame from there.

But he simply powered away from Tiz The Law in the final lengths of that race, and he looks like a pneumatically quick horse, so this shorter distance should be right in his wheelhouse as well.

If he gets himself in front then it is going to be mightily hard to stop him and he has been clocking some fantastic training times before flying out to Maryland.

So yes, he is a genuine contender for the double.

ART COLLECTOR does have a chance from an inside stall and in three of the last five years, that is where the winner of the Preakness has come from.

So together they are the leading two in what should be a fantastic race.

But as mentioned in this Preakness Stakes betting odds preview, the chance of Art Collector is all going to be in a quick start.

He doesn’t want to find himself trying to chase down Authentic in the final furlong or two, as that’s not likely to happen.

As for the big outside pick that will have to be MR BIG NEWS from 16/1* (odds taken 02:13 GMT Thursday, 1st October).

He finished, albeit helped at the start by a good draw, at the Kentucky Derby should rightly have made punters sit up and take notice.

It will be interesting to see if he can rustle up some place claims at Pimlico on the weekend.

He goes from stall two, which produced 2018 winner Cloud Computing.
