Can Tokyo Getaway strike back?

After being a beaten favourite last time out, the second race in which she has taken runners up, Tokyo Getaway will have something to prove to backers here. She is one of the top-rated runners for this race and is a distance winner. Her last outing was at Tramore over 2m 5f last month, where she was second as the 9/2 favourite on what was her chase debut. So all things considered, it wasn’t a bad effort at all. Can she get the victory at the 2/1 favouritism this time?* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 12th, 2020 at 2:38 pm).

The Reaping Race and The Church Gate

The Reaping Race has yet to secure a hurdle victory from 11 previous starts. In his last outing, he was in a hurdle at Fairyhouse over the 3m distance, which was a good workout. There was an improvement as well from him managing to get his first place finish from those 11 hurdle races. So there’s some progression. That was a 3rd place finish.

Nine-year-old The Church Gate has good claims in this race. He has won three hurdles of varying distances up to 2m 6f. So this is a little extra trip for him. He was nowhere near a win in his last run which was at Leopardstown in December, finishing 9 lengths back to the winner, but earned a solid fifth. He has cheekpieces and tongue strap for this one. They are both 4/1 contenders* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 12th, 2020 at 2:38 pm).

Can Howaya Aoife get back up?

After showing some good seasonal form, with a win and a place, things came crashing down for Joaway Aoife in her last outing. She was a faller early in a run at Fairyhouse in a hurdle race. She has won over 3m before, which was in a point-to-point. If she gets back up after her recent setback she could get herself in the frame in this one. In a November run at Punchestown at a Mares Handicap Handicap hurdle she beat Tokyo Getaway by half a length, staying one well at the end against her younger competitors.

Jaunty Warrior is the other making up those in the market on Sunday who was coming in at single figure. He is not carrying any kind of form, however. He was last seen on Boxing Day last year where he was 14th of 18th for trainer Gordon Elliot. That was his maiden hurdle. Since his victory at Ffos Las in 2017, there has been very little on show from the 9-year-old.

Distance Winners

Other distance winners in the field include Nicoles Milan, who took a fourth-place finish at Fairyhouse over the 3m distance earlier this month. Mystic Embar has had one outing on his return to action by pulled up at Askann in November. The Grey Guy, a 13-year-old, was second from last on his last run at Limerick a month ago.
