Hardwicke Stakes History
First run in 1879, the race is usually an important stepping stone to the King George V and Queen Elizabeth Stakes also run at Ascot later in the summer. Only two horses have done the double, however – Aureole in 1954 and Harbinger 10 years ago.

ANTHONY VAN DYCK won the Epsom Derby last year and was second in the Irish equivalent four weeks later.
He ran poorly in the King George here on his next start but redeemed himself somewhat when third in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at the end of the year.
Second to the race-fit Ghaiyyath in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket on his reappearance, the O’Brien colt holds last year’s winner Defoe on that run and could be one of the meeting’s bankers at a best 7/4.
Defoe is a lot better than he showed at Newmarket, where he paid the price for trying to keep tabs on the all-the-way winner, and he has place claims again at 8/1 with Bet365.
Elarqam was a Group 2 winner at York last year but connections have chosen a very tough race for him to try 1m4f for the first time. However, the owner’s colours have been frequently seen in the winner’s enclosure already this week so who is to say he won’t last home. Mark Johnston’s five-year-old is a best 4/1 with 888sport but four-year-old have much the best record in this.
Fanny Logan never looked like getting to Manuel De Vega at Haydock and stamina doubts remain for the filly, who is a general 8/1, but Morando could be interesting at a best 12/1 with significant rain. The latter won on his return to action last year was fourth in the Hardwicke Stakes 12 months ago after meeting trouble in-running.
