Werder Bremen v Spurs Betting and Match Preview:

Both sides had to come through qualification to reach the group stage of the Champions League, and for Tottenham, this represents their first venture into the tournament. Both teams won their play off legs at home, and both were defeated away, which suggest there is not much to chose between them. Naturally there is no head to head stats to look at in order to gauge Champions League betting on this match, so we will go down a different route and take a good look at both sides and their chances in a tough group which also contains Inter Milan and FC Twente. For Spurs, this is tough introduction into Europe’s elite competition, as they have to travel away to Germany, which is never an easy place to go and pick up points. They won’t find their opposition any kind of pushovers, and they have some Champions League experience to help them, and that could be crucial. Champions League football betting for this one has to be mindful of the injury problems which Tottenham have. They are missing key players at such a crucial time, and that could mean you will see more of a backs to the wall defensive performance from the London side, as they will undoubtedly come under a lot of pressure. If Spurs come out of this match with a draw, then manager Harry Redknapp would probably be a very happy man, as it will give them a platform to build upon ahead of their match day two fixture which is back at White Hart Lane against group outsiders FC Twente. Four points from their opening two games would put them in decent shape early on. For match betting on this one, unpatriotically, Bremen have to be looked at as favourite and would be worth backing for a win.

Werder Bremen Betting:

This is a team which finished third in the Bundesliga last year, arguably one of the toughest leagues in Europe. The German league doesn’t grab a lot of attention, but it has some of the biggest, most intimidating stadiums and crowds in Europe, which always makes it a tough place to travel to. Bremen were fired into the Champions League with the help of two goals from Claudio Pizarro, who the Spurs defence will need to keep an eye on. Bremen missed out on Champions League football last year, but they did reach the last sixteen of the Europa League, winning five and drawing one of their six home matches in the group stage. They were only eliminated then on the away goal rule in the last sixteen against Valencia. But that shows that they know what they are doing in Europe, and have plenty of experience in the Champions League to back that up. Their last campaign though in 2008/09 was their worst, as they only won one of their six group matches. Having never played Tottenham before in the Champions League, they do have history against English sides however, ironically against the great rivals of Spurs, Arsenal, who the German side lost to in both legs of 1999/2000 UEFA Cup quarter finals. They then lost to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 2006/07, but did beat the Blues back in Germany. They can boast goalkeeper Tim Wiese, Mikael Silvestre, Torsten Frings and Hugo Almeida among the quality which they can field. Have had a real mixed bag of results at the start of their new Bundesliga season. They were hammered 4-1 in their opening match, before winning 4-0 in their second, and then playing out a 0-0 draw in their third. This is the sixth time in seven seasons in which Bremen have been in the group stages, but they had a mighty fight on their hands to squeeze through against Sampdoria, winning 5-4 on aggregate after extra time in the second leg away from home. There was a lot of resilience shown when their backs were against the wall, and shows what a battle Spurs will have on their hands. Bremen though, will be missing their starting centre half pairing of Per Mertesacker and Naldo though, which does give Tottenham a glimmer of a break.

Spurs Betting:

It’s nice to be talking about a different English side in the Champions League for a change! In their European history, Spurs have travelled to Germany eight times. Of those matches, they have returned to England with just three wins, and the other five matches have all ended in defeat. Their last journey there was in 2006/07 when they played Bayer Leverkusen and beat them 1-0 (thanks to a goal by Dimitar Berbatov) so there is some recent history to give them confidence. After a close run race against Manchester City in the Premier League last year for the final Champions League spot, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp know enters untested territory for the London club. They haven’t been blessed with an easy draw at all, and they need all of their battling qualities to get through to the knockout stage. They were undone away from home by Swiss Young Boys 3-2 and that suggest that it may be their home form which gets them where they want to go. The problem for Harry Redknapp, and something which should sway your Champions League football betting for this match, is that Spurs have been hit hard by injury. Firstly newly installed England centre half Michael Dawson picked up a long term injury on international duty, and striker Jermain Defoe is set to miss around three months worth of action after picking up a knee injury while also playing for England. All Redknapp has left is Roman Pavlyuchenkova, Giovani Dos Santos, Robbie Keane and Peter Crouch (who hit a hat trick during the Champions League play-off). Redknapp is also without Jonathan Woodgate, who looks to have ended his season already because of an ongoing groin injury. There were more worries on Saturday, when Luka Modric limped away from their draw at West Brom, and there were fears that he would be missing for a long time also. But, in some good news for Spurs, the Croatian playmaker is expected to be ready in time for Tuesday. Redknapp has brought in William Gallas to boost the defence, and captured Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid at the close of the summer transfer window. Make no mistake, this is a very tough introduction to Champions League football for Spurs, and with only one win in four matches in the Premier League this season, not everything is looking quite as rosy as it was at the close of last season. Just three goals in those four matches highlights the problem which Redknapp needs to solve quickly, and without hot shot Defoe, their task is going to be made all that much more difficult. If they sneak a win, it will be a marvellous triumph for Spurs, and the Bremen defence has shown that it can leak goals. But Spurs don’t look as if they quite have enough in the tank to pull off a major convincing win, so a draw on them would make for a sensible bet.
