What are the FedEx Cup Play-Offs

The FedEx Cup playoffs are a series of three tournaments that follow on from the end of the regular season. Throughout the regular season, players pick up FedEx Cup play-off points for performances in tournaments.

Out of that, the top 125 players on the leaderboard make it through to the FedEx Cup playoffs. It’s that field of 125 that begin the FedEx St Jude Championship.

Only the Top 70 points leaders on the FedEx Cup at the conclusion of the St Jude Championship move forward to the BMW Championship. Then the Top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings then go forward to the big finale, which is the Tour Championship:

The FedEx Cup used to be a series of four tournaments, but that was cut back to three in 2019.

FedEx Cup Series

  • FedEx St Jude Championship – Top 125 points leaders
  • BMW Championship – Top 70 points leaders
  • Tour Championship – Top 30 points leaders

This is the only one of the FedEx Cup playoff tournaments that has a cut. The event was also renamed to the St Jude Championship this season. It was formerly known as the Northern Trust. The prize fund for the FedEx St Jude Championship this year is US $15m.

Key focus areas for St Jude Championship golf tips

TPC Southwind is one of the leading courses in the USA and so players heading there this week for the St Jude Championship know the challenges ahead. The course has been in use on the PGA Tour for more than 30 years.

One major feature of TPC Southwind is small greens, which means that approach accuracy is very high on the checklist. The course is lined with trees and therefore the further challenge is also sticking it on the fairway.

So it is not about the big drivers this week, a fine touch, especially with the irons is likely to be the key thing.

Our betting prediction:
Patrick Cantlay
18/1

Who is the St Jude Championship Betting Favourite?

Rory McIlroy is the current 11/1 favourite in St Jude Championship golf betting odds* (odds recorded at 16:42 GMT on August 8th, 2022 at Paddy Power). The Northern Ireland star has been in cracking form recently.

McIlroy claimed the RBC Canadian Open in June and McIlroy has taken a top five finish in two of his three efforts since in North America. That included a T5 finish at the US Open and a third-place finish at The Open.

He is definitely one of the front-runners in the mix for the St Jude Championship tips based on current form.

Other key contenders in St Jude Championship Tips

PATRICK CANTLAY has not managed to take a title during 2022. But he has rattled the crossbar a few times. He is usually the model of consistency so seeing him put together a strong challenge in Memphis isn’t going to be a huge surprise.

Cantlay has taken a top-three finish in each of his last events. Cantlay goes to TPC Southwind on the back of a T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the end of July.

For St Jude Championship golf betting, Cantlay is an 18/1 option* (odds recorded at 16:42 GMT on August 8th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

TONY FINAU has run into some hot form just at the right time ahead of the FedEx Cup Play-offs. It’s been back-to-back tournament wins for him.

Finau has banked a top-two finish in three of his last six appearances. Finau is on the golf betting radar at 22/1* (odds recorded at 16:42 GMT on August 8th, 2022 at Paddy Power)

St Jude Invitational Select Odds

  • Rory McIlroy – 11/1
  • Cameron Smith – 16/1
  • Xander Schauffele – 18/1
  • Patrick Cantlay – 18/1
  • Tony Finau – 22/1

Australian CAMERON SMITH put in a barn-storming finish at St Andrew’s to land The Open. It was a cracking final round of 64 to get him in the winner’s circle. Smith landed a to-5 finish on his last visit to TPC Southwind in August last year.

XANDER SCHAUFFELE will probably find himself on the shortlist for a lot of punters in St Jude Invitational Golf tips as well.

He has banked two wins in his last three tournaments. Those wins came at the Travelers Championship and the Genesis Scottish Open. Sandwiching those two results were Top 15 finishes at the US Open and The Open.

Longer odds options for the St Jude Championship Golf Betting

BILLY HORSCHEL seems to enjoy a knock-around at Southwind. It has been a solid season for him and he has carded five previous top-ten finishes at the venue. He goes to Southwind after a top-30 at the Wyndham Championship on the weekend.

Another with a bit of previous course form is MATT FITZPATRICK. The US Open champion has some previous top-ten finishes at TPC Southwind.

The Englishman has been in excellent, consistent form. He has taken a top ten finish in six of his last ten events and four of those were top-five finishes.

SUNG JAE IM has rattled the crossbar in his last two tournaments, having to settle for runners-up finishes in both.

It’s been exactly the same for CAMERON YOUNG as well, so warrants a look in the St Jude Championship betting odds, the latter coming in at 30/1* (odds recorded at 16:42 GMT on August 8th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

St Jude Invitational Select Odds

  • Sung Jae Im – 40/1
  • Billy Horschel – 50/1
  • Matt Fitzpatrick – 22/1
  • Cameron Young – 30/1
