Stewards Cup Favourites and Outsiders

A look at how the favourites from the last ten renewals have got on is the first focal point of this Stewards Cup preview.

It has been a race in which favourites have struggled just a little to get on the board.

There have been three winning favourites in the last ten renewals of the race. The most recent of those was Khaadem in 2019. The others were Dancing Star in 2016 and Magical Memory in 2015.

Part of that is because there is normally a huge field which makes it such a thrilling and unpredictable race. It’s one where longer odds tend to come into play.

For example, there are 28 declared runners for the 2022 Stewards Cup renewal. The joint favourites are currently at 8/1* (odds recorded at 23:16 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Coral).

Longer-priced leanings in Stewards Cup odds

Six of the last ten rivals of the Stewards Cup have been won by at least 9/1 odds. So bigger odds have come into play. Last year’s winner was Comanche Falls at 10/1 SP.

Four of the last five winners of the race have been at double figures in the Stewards Cup betting market. Three of the last five have been at least odds of 20/1.

2021 Comanche Falls 10/1
2020 Summerghand 22/1
2019 Khadeem 4/1F
2018 Gifted Masters 20/1
2017 Lancelot Du Lac 25/1

So the recommendation ahead of 2022 Stewards Cup tips is to really size up the entire field. It is often a wide-open contest.

About the Stewards Cup

The first edition of the Stewards Cup was held in 1840. Before that, there had been a cup awarded to a race winner of the senior steward’s choosing at the meeting. That was the starting point for what is known as the Stewards Cup today at Goodwood.

The idea was to have just one specific, annual race for which the Stewards Cup was awarded each year. And so the idea of the Stewards Cup race was born, coming in at a distance of 6f right from the start.

The fixture used to be a part of the Festival’s first day, but in 1993 it was moved over to the fifth and final day. There it has stayed through to the present day.

The Stewards Cup is a handicap race, open to all horses three years old and up.

Stewards Cup contenders – 30th July 2022

The Stewards Cup odds for 2022 paint a very competitive picture with a lot of strong claims through the declared runners. WHENTHEDEALINSDONE won at Goodwood last year, scoring the World Pool Handicap. He’s been winless since then but is expected to be in the mix.

MR WAGYU is on the radar as well after producing some good recent winning form. It’s been two wins in his last three efforts. Both of those were very narrow scores. Mr Wagyu recently scored at the Curragh by a head.

The pick of the form may be with INVER PARK who completed a hat trick last time out. He completed that run with a score at Ascot in the Buckingham Palace Stakes last month. Inver Park is a currently 8/1 joint-favourite contender alongside Whenthedealinsdone* (odds recorded at 23:16 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Coral).

Further contenders

FIRST FOLIO has also piqued some interest in the 2022 Stewards Cup after a credible run at Royal Ascot last time out. He was sixth in the Wokingham stakes, continuing some good competitive form this season.

2020 winner SUMMERGHAND is back for another crack and is at 11/1* (odds recorded at 23:16 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Coral). He is currently on a long winless streak, reaching back to August last year. But some encouraging runs at York and Ascot the last twice has shone a good light on him.

As mentioned the field goes deep with claims in this year’s Stewards Cup. The likes of GREAT AMBASSADOR, POPMASTER and CHIL CHIL all bring strong claims to the table.

Stewards Cup Trends Glorious Goodwood 2022

For the next part of this Stewards Cup Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Class 2 fixture.

Each of the last ten renewals of the race has been won by a horse with a British trainer. Again we are just going to mention longer odds. The biggest priced winner to get home in the last two decades of the race was 40/1 shot Conquest I in 2008.

Stewards Cup Trainer Statistics

It is a hard race to win and that is highlighted by none of the trainers in this year’s renewal having claimed it more than once.

There are only three previous winning trainers in this year’s line-up.

Those are David O’Meara, Andrew Balding and Michael Dods. The latter got his breakthrough last year with Commanche Falls.

David O’Mera brought home 22/1 shot Summerghand the year before that, while Andrew Balding’s success in the Stewards Cup was back in 2016 with favourite Dancing Star.

With those winning trainers in mind, here are the 2022 entries:

  • David O’Meara – Gulliver, Summerghand
  • Michael Dods – Tinto, Commanche Falls
  • Andrew Balding – Chil Chil

On the other end of the scale the trainer to avoid, based fully on the stats of the last 20 renewals, is Kevin Ryan. He has sent a whopping 34 entries into the Goodwood contest without success.

Out of all that he has claimed just two places. Ryan has one entry this year, 25/1 shot JUSTANOTHERBOTTLE* (odds recorded at 23:16 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Coral).

Stewards Cup Jockey Statistics

We are in a similar boat when it comes to the winning jockeys across the last 20 renewals of the Stewards Cup. None of this year’s riders have won the fixture more than once. It’s a total of five previous winning jockeys that have a booking for Saturday’s event.

Those are Jim Crowley, Neil Callan, David Probert, Jason Watson and Connor Beasley. The latter got his win last year on Commanche Falls for Michael Dods. The trainer and jockey team up this year with the same horse.

Crowley scored on King George Stakes hopeful Khaadem in 2019, Watson (5lbs) on Gifted Master the year before that, while Probert landed his score in 2016 on Dancing Star.

Here are the 2022 rides for those previous winning jockeys

  • Jim Crowley – Annaf (Michael Appleby)
  • Neil Callan – Whenthedealinsdone (Roger Teal)
  • David Probert – Tinto (Michael Dods)
  • Connor Beasley – Comanche Falls (Micahel Dods)
  • Jason Watson – Summerghan (David O’Meara)

Looking at that, the connection of winning trainer Dods with two previous winning jockeys is very interesting. The other is Summerghand with the pairing of Watson and O’Meara.

Ryan Moore has had 17 rides in the Stewards Cup during his career and has failed to land a win. It’s been four place finishes for him. Ryan Moore goes on 14/1 shot REGIONAL for 2022* (odds recorded at 23:16 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Coral).

Other Key Stewards Cup Trends

In the last ten renewals of the Stewards Cup, the favourite (including joint-favourites) have cracked the top three on just three occasions. On each of those occasions, they were the winner of the race.

  • Each of the last 20 winners had won within their last 10 starts
  • Between 2-8 starts had been made for the season by each of the last 20 winners
  • None of the last 20 winners had previously been bigger than 66/1 in their career
  • Each of the last 20 renewals was won by a horse that was no more than 5lb under the average weight.
  • At least one winning trip and distance had been recorded by the last 20 winner
  • All but one of the last 20 Stewards Cup winners had between 2-7 wins on turf
  • Only one of the last 20 winners had had at least two previous starts at Goodwood
  • Just one of the last 20 renewals was won by a horse older than 6
  • The last win was recorded in England by 19 of the last 20 winners
  • All but one of the last 20 winners was a gelding or a colt

Stewards Cup 2021 Review

COMMANCHE FALLS was the winner of the 2021 Stewards Cup from a 10/1 SP and did so carrying a 6lb penalty. He simply stayed in touch racing on the near side and made his move 1f out.

It was a tight one though as he battled right to the line with an 18/1 shot GULLIVER. Comanche Falls just was able to hang on with his momentum, to claim the victory by a neck in a thrilling climax.

Coming home third by a head was GREAT AMBASSADOR who was heading for second, but just slipped back at the crucial time.

It wasn’t a great day at the office by either joint-favourite in the contest. FRESH came home in eighth place, well ahead of fifteenth-place finisher HURRICANE IVOR who massively disappointed supporters.
