Tavus is our racing tip in 1.05 Wetherby 23 January

Have a slice of Pie at Wetherby

Horse Racing Betting

The Every Race Live On Racing TV Juvenile Hurdle looks a good opportunity for the well-regarded TAVUS to pick up the winning thread again after the disappointment of Chepstow.

The Jedd O’Keeffe youngster made an eye-catching debut over hurdles at Newcastle when beating previous winner Navajo Pass at Newcastle.

The second went on to land a Grade 2 at Doncaster so the yard travelled with plenty of confidence to the Finale Hurdle over Christmas. Unfortunately, Tavus was never seen with a chance but he’s a lot better than that performance suggests.

A three-times winner up to 1m6f on the Flat when with Roger Charlton, the Pour Moi gelding may do even better when tackling 2m4f but it will be a surprise if he doesn’t have the class to win Wetherby’s opener under a penalty.

Tavus tipped to get back on track at 2/1 with Betvictor

Cawthorne Lad beat Gordalan earlier in the month and his form at Catterick looks stronger that that of Coup De Gold.

Dark Lochnagar was a very useful handicapper on the Flat up to 1m2f and has a first run over hurdles for Keith Dalgleish. If he takes to the winter game, there are races to be with the son of Australia who is Flat-bred but related to a jumps winner. He is a best 7/2 with Bet365.

Have a slice of Pie in Wetherby feature

Nicky Richards trains in Cumbria but is no stranger to the winner’s enclosure at Wetherby and his stable has been among the winners over the last few days.

There are certainly worse each-way bets that Bernardelli in the feature Follow RacingTV On Twitter Handicap Chase this Thursday.

Available at a general 16/1, he is a 12-year-old now but there were excuses for his latest run at Kelso when he finished tailed off. He’s been given a few weeks to recover – but is he as good as he once was?

Beau Bay (11/2 with Betvictor) is among the favourites and is 2-2 at Wetherby. But he was running on empty at the line last time and a case can be made for Hollywoodien (a general 7/2) to come out best of the pair this time. The latter was travelling strongly in the same race when unseating his rider and is better off at the weights.

Storm Control (a general 3/1) is the likely pace angle having made all the running at Doncaster. he was second at Wetherby the time before so the stiff fences shouldn’t catch him out, though he has never won back-to-back races.

THE PADDY PIE has been a typical Sue Smith slow-burner this season. He was much better at Sedgefield recently when not given a hard time and the handicapper has dropped him a further 2lb since.

The bottom weight is now on the same mark as when successful at Haydock around this time last year and he may be able to pick off his rivals in the closing stages if now fully up to speed – he is a best 5/1.
