Favourite Quel Destin not likely to get upset at Wincanton

Horse Racing Betting

Saturday is a big day of racing and part of the action from Wincanton is the Kingwell Hurdle (Grade 2). This class 1 contest has a field of six taking to the start which is a trip over 1m 7f 65y.

There is an interesting line up for this year’s renewal including Elgin, a former winner of this race but who hasn’t been seen since March 2018.

Quel Destin 7/4

Quel Destin the one to beat in Wincanton field

The favourite for this Wincanton trip is French runner Quel Destin who is at 7/4 in the market* (betting odds taken from bet365 on February 14th, 2020 at 20:57). He banked a win on his last hurdle effort which was at Sandown earlier in February. That was over a 2m trip from a mark of 6/1.

It was his eighth success between 1m 7f and 2m 1f. So he certainly fits the bill with big claims for this race. That win at Sandown was the second success of Quel Destin this season having previously won at Cheltenham.

Can Chtibello challenge at the front?

The last run that Chtibello had was at the Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle at Kempton. That was a 2m trip and he settled for a finish in the middle of the field of ten.

The 9-year-old has won four times over the hurdles at 2m to 2m 1f and may show up in this smaller field. He was last year’s County Handicap winner and on a trip back to Cheltenham in December, he went well for a third-place finish.

His last visit to Wincanton ended in a second-place at 6/4 in February 2018. Chtibello is 11/4 second favourite for this weekend’s action* (betting odds taken from bet365 on February 14th, 2020 at 20:57)

What can Elgin do?

The last run that Elgin took was a hate Group 1 Unibet Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy at Cheltenham over 2m in March 2018. That same year he won this race as well. But there is now the unknown factor of him having been away for so long.

His entry is very interesting and bootmakers have opted for a bit of caution on his return at a quote of 9/2* (betting odds taken from bet365 on February 14th, 2020 at 20:57).

Song For Someone to sing a fine tune?

Song For Someone carries some appeal at 7/2 for this contest* (betting odds taken from bet365 on February 14th, 2020 at 20:57). He was second at Ascot in a hurdle at 2m 3f in January in some heavy conditions. But it was a very good run that he put in and the five-year-old has favourable weights for this next trip.

Song For Someone did put a 2m 1f win on the board at Fontwell at class 3 back in mid-November. With a third and a second in his following two races, both at class 1, has proven already that the youngster can live among the better company.

Zambella and Calgary Tiger

Zambella was up against Quel Destin at Sandown on her last trip. She came home fourth of five in that contest from a mark of 33/1. She was ultimately eleven lengths back of the latter. In the early part of 2019, she ran into good form for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies. She looks as if she needs to find more currently.

As for Calgary Tiger, this will be his fifth start and he has not managed to get into the places yet. He was a 200/1 shot on his most recent run which was in NH flat race last month. Calgary Tiger was a sixth of 13th in the fixture. He is probably going to be well out of his depth on the weekend.

Tips and Predictions

The favourite, Quel Destin doesn’t immediately look beatable in this fixture. He has shaped up well and his victory at the Contenders Hurdle earlier in February showed his form and class.

The other one will appeal is definitely Song For Someone, who has put in some very good recent efforts and could get in the frame.
