Wolverhampton 15:35: Betway offer 9/2 racing odds on Ghaith – 15th January 2020

Can Ghaith handle stiff weight penalty?

Horse Racing Betting

The Wolverhampton 15:35 is a Class 4 Handicap. This one just a shy over the 7f distance and there are six entries for the fixture after Fastar was declared a non-runner on Monday.

It is course and distance winner Ghaith who is top of the market at short odds. However, the picture may not be that clear cut.

That is because the five-year-old is not the only one in the field to have delivered a win before at C&D. Read our Wednesday racing preview for more details.

Ghaith the one to beat?

Trainer David Loughnane has the favourite out for this fixture at Wolverhampton on Wednesday. On his debut for his new yard, he posted a victory at course and distance just last December.

That was a five-length victory which he took but has paid an 11lb penalty for that success. That’s a huge jump for him and it will be interesting to see how he handles the gain as the 6/4 favourite* (betting odds taken from Betway on January 14th, 2020 at 3:05 pm).

Luis Vaz De Torres
8/1

Mickey is a C&D winner

The other courses and distance winner in the field is Mickey. Mickey has won a couple of times in his career at the 7f distance. He was last out at Lingfield in December where he put in a really poor effort, coming second from last.

That’s five runs since his last victory and he hasn’t looked like getting one since. That run at Lingfield was a significant disappointment in form. So his claims for the race will be on his C&D alone.

That Is The Spirit

This is the Spirit has won eight races over the distance before and was fifth last time out. That was from a field of ten at 7/1 odds at Doncaster in August last year. It wasn’t a bad run at all and the 9-year-old certainly wasn’t disgraced front the effort.

Luis Vaz De Torres was fifth at Lingfield over the distance in December. That was on the back of a decent run of form, three place finishes being capped off by a victory. Smokey Lane hasn’t won at the distance, the only one if the field not to have done so. He was third at a 7f run earlier this month at Southwell.

Prediction

Ghaith was massively impressive in his win at Wolverhampton at C&D in December. He was head and shoulders above the field on that one. But while there is clear progression to come from him, an 11lb raise is nothing to be ignored.

But there is a little form to pull from elsewhere. Mickey has the C&D but little else of note. So the outside shot for the race would be Luis Vaz De Torres. He has produced some previous competitive levels and he is a previous winner at Wolverhampton.
