Can Reeves keep winning form going?

There has been such great form produced by 4-year-old Reeves. He will be looking for his fifth straight win as he steps out at Wolverhampton on Wednesday. He has taken four previous wins on the all-weather between 6f and 7f. In his last run, he edged a short head victory at Lingfield from 4/1.

There was some pressure on him in that competitive race. But he showed some great grit and fought to stick it out and beat some good company in that handicap. Reeves may need more of the same in this one. He goes up a couple of pounds but drops in class for this run and is at 2/1 to get the win* (betting odds taken from Betfred at 20:06 on Tuesday, February 4th 2020).

Can Ghaith stop Reeves’ winning streak?

Ghaith is gunning for his hattrick, so is also bang in form at the moment. He claimed a course and distance win on Boxing Day at Class five and then delivered against at C&D on New Year’s Day in a Class 4. So this is another step up for him in class and will have to deal with more weight because of his recent successes. Still, he looks the biggest threat to Reeves for sure at 15/8* (betting odds taken from Betfred at 20:06 on Tuesday, February 4th 2020)

Can Calder Prince or Young Fire pull into the picture

As a 15/2 quote for the win* (betting odds taken from Betfred at 20:06 on Tuesday, February 4th 2020), there may be some appeal in outsider Calder Prince. He has been in the places in four of his last five runs. He was third last time out at Chelmsford in a 6f trip. But he has banked a couple of all-weather wins before between 6f and 1m. There does look to be enough there to compete for a place, having taken a second at the track at Class 3 in mid-October on his last visit.

A second-place finish at Wolverhampton at distance will lead to some interesting claims by Young Fire. He was only edged out by half a length by POwer Link in that race, who Reeves just recently beat by a short head at Lingfield. He goes a touch shorter than Calder Prince at 5/1* (betting odds taken from Betfred at 20:06 on Tuesday, February 4th 2020).

The rest of the runners

Rank outsider Bungee Jump struggled to a finish of 7th of 8 in her last run which was at Kempton last month. That was after having come in off the back of a victory as well. Gallipoli was another poor finisher in his last trip. He was sixth of 7 at Chelmsford over a 7f trip.

Donncha seemed to be hitting a bit of form last year but the nine-year has gone beyond that peak it would seem. He was second from last in a field of 11 at Newcastle at 7f in December. That Is The Spirit raised a second-place effort in his last run at the 7f distance at Kempton. He will have a little favouritism in the weights.

Predictions & Tips

It is hard to see beyond a two-horse race in this one. It should be down to Reeves and Ghaith, so which takes precedence? The tremendous competitive edge that Reeves showed in winning at Lingfield last time out was a real treat. If it’s a tight battle at the finish at Wolverhampton too, that could just be the telling difference in this one. Ghaith’s recent wins have been far more straightforward without a stressful finish.
