King’s Stand Stakes History

The Kings’ Stand was inaugurated in 1860 and the 5f fixture had funny beginnings, even though it is one of the top sprints now at Royal Ascot.

It was introduced in 1860 because heavy rain scuppered the running of the 2m Royal Stand Plate.

The planned race was trimmed right back to a 5f sprint and has been in place ever since.

It has gone through some changes such as being open to 2-year-olds and above at one stage.

The King’s Stand opened as a Group 1 fixture in 1973 but in 1988 was slid back to a Group 2, before regaining a place in the top tier in 2008.

Nature Strip 5/2 FAV in King’s Stand Stakes Racing Odds

NATURE STRIP should have a fair chance in this one and has been trading well in the market.

There is a quote of 5/2 currently on Nature Strip in King’s Stand Stakes odds* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

The Australian challenger is high rated and stands in high regard as well beings a big threat to the table.

He won last time out, 73 days ago at the T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick.

Connections haven’t sent him this far to play a supporting role.

It’s been five wins in 11 spins on the turf for the 8-year-old and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t find himself heavily involved.

KING’S LYNN
14/1

King’s Stand Stakes Betting Contenders

This is a very competitive renewal of the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot 2022.

US challenger GOLDEN PAL is in prime form at the moment.

He completed a hattrick in his most recent form.

The latest of those victories happened at Keeneland two months ago in a Grade 2.

The only blip on his record was a misfire in the Nunthorpe at York last August.

But he hasn’t looked back since and is 3/1 in Royal Stand Stakes betting* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

Another one that is highly respected for this contest is LAZULI who is on the up this season.

He arrives on the back of a Group 2 success at Meydan in February.

Horse Racing Betting at William Hill

The low mileage MAN OF PROMISE took back-to-back victories at Meydan earlier this year as well.

He was third in the Al Quoz Sprint at the venue on his latest and Charlie Appleby’s charge looks full of promise.

WINTER POWER can’t be written off on top form.

She was at her peak when landing the Nunthorpe in August, but hasn’t quite found that same level since. A recent reappearance should help her out.

TWILIGHT CALLS could enter the frame with a positive run as he has looked so much better in this campaign.

He found only King’s Lynn too good at Haydock’s Temple Stakes three weeks ago.

Another that warrants respect and a potential place on the shortlist is MOONEISTA who is in good form.

She’s been competitive and showed well to take second in the Greenlands Stakes three weeks ago.

King’s Stand Stakes Favourites – Royal Ascot betting

It’s always an interesting angle into King’s Stand Stakes betting to take a look at how favourites have been faring.

It may not be great news for the 2022 Royal Ascot favourite Nature Strip as there has only been one favourite win in the last ten renewals.

That was a recent one, however, as Battaash delivered the odds as the 5/6 F in 2020 for trainer Charles Hills.

All but one of the last 20 renewals have been won by a horse that was inside the top eight in the market.

But this top 5f sprint hasn’t been a race in which massive upsets have happened.

The longest-priced winner in the last ten renewals was 20/1 shot Goldream back in 2015.

Six of the last seven renewals have been won at no more than a 6/1 SP in King’s Stand betting odds.

King’s Stand Stakes Trends

Moving on to some King’s Stand Stakes trends, half of the last twenty renewals have been scored by a British trainer.

The next best in that time frame is three for Australia, which does swing something towards the race favourite Nature Strip.

US raider Lady Aurelia shook things up in 2017 with a victory as a 3-year-old.

That was the first time since 2008 that a 3-year-old had won the fixture.

12 of the last 13 renewals of the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot have been won by a horse between 4 and 6 years old inclusive.

Interestingly, two horses have managed to successfully defend their King’s Stand crown in the last decade.

Sole Power took it in 2013 and 2014. Blue Point followed suit in 2018 and 2019.

They are the only two to have achieved that feat since 1970, although Elbio won it twice, but not in consecutive years (1991 and 1993).

King’s Stand Stakes Trends Royal Ascot

  • The last 20 renewals have been won by a horse that had a least placed in the last 3 starts
  • None of the last 20 editions have been won from stalls 4-6
  • 20 of the last 20 Kings Stand renewals were won by a horse that had between 1 and 6 wins in the last 12 months.
  • All but one of the last 20 winners had won at Listed level at least
  • At least 3 previous turf wins had been taken by 19 of the last 20 winners
  • All but two of the last 20 renewals were won by one that had produced at least 4 career wins
  • Four winners in the last two decades had ran at Haydock last time out

King’s Stand Stakes Trainer & Jockey Trends

Across the last two decades of the thrilling sprint action in the King’s Stand, there have been two active trainers to have won the race twice.

Those are Robert Cowell and Charlie Appleby.

Cowell got his from 11 entered runners, while Appleby scored his two from four entries so has a fantastic strike rate.

For the 2022 King’s Stand betting, Appleby has Lazuli and Man Of Promise as interesting contenders from 20/1 and 12/1 respectively* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

In the last 20 editions no active jockey has won the race more than one.

We have Adam Kirby, James Doyle and William Buick as the only one to have delivered a win in this fixture.

James Doyle and William Buick are riding for Charlie Appleby on Tuesday, so there are some nice pairings there.

Doyle is on Lazuli and Buick on Man Of Promise.

Adam Kirby is booked for 33/1 shot Tis Marvellous* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

King’s Stand Stakes Tips & Predictions Royal Ascot 2022

This is a cracking sprint and it may be a tough one for a home horse to come through and take the spoils.

Australian raider NATURE STRIP brings some solid claims without question, but the trend does not go towards the favourite.

He’s on the shortlist at 5/2 however* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

But our top pick for the King’s Stand Tips is KING’S LYNN at 14/1* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

He falls into some strong trend categories and he comes from a favourable track last time out, namely Haydock where he won the Group 2 Temple Stakes.

The final selection is a longer-priced one, the 33/1 shot TIS MARVELLOUS* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

He is a four-time course and distance winner and although he was below his best last time out, it was an excusable reappearance run and he should be sharper.
