St James’s Stakes History

The first-ever edition of the St James’s Palace Stakes was hosted in 1834. Since the modern grading of races came onto the scene in the early 1970s, the St James’s Palace Stakes has been both a Group 2 and a Group 1.

It received its current status at the top of the tier in 1899. Because of the distance and conditions of the race, being open only to 3-year-old colts, it’s not uncommon to see participants who have taken on the 2000 Guineas or the Irish 2000 Guineas.

Coroebus 4/6 FAV in St James’s Palace Stakes Racing Odds

COROEBUS is the current 4/6 leader in St James’s Palace Stakes odds for Royal Ascot 2022* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

Given what he has produced so far, the youngster looks like a good one.

He goes for the Charlie Appleby/William Buick trainer/jockey combo.

Coroebus produced some fantastic juvenile efforts, winning two of his three runs as a 2-year-old.

Truth be told, if luck had been on his side at Newmarket in the Group 2 Juddmonte in September, he would be going into Royal Ascot 2022 undefeated.

He was beaten by a neck in the Juddmonte by Royal Patronage.

Coroebus returned to action for the first time this year in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and he looked so impressive there in April.

He claimed the win, by three-quarters of a length ahead of Native Trail.

Coroebus clearly sets the standard for the St James’s Palace Stakes.

St James’s Palace Stakes Betting Contenders

We have already sized up the St James’s Palace stakes betting favourite for the 2022 renewal.

But our experts have to dig through the field to size up the competition. Is there someone in this intriguing field that can take down the favourite?

MY PROSPERO can reach the top level in his career and he has been a rapid improver this season.

The Willie Haggas-trainer contender didn’t win on his debut but has taken his form forward in both runs this season.

He opened with a maiden win before taking the Heron at Sandown (Listed) a month ago. My Prospero is on the up and contender for the places at least.

Another one from Haggas is MALJOOM who could have a credible shot at the places.

He brings an unbeaten record to the table having won three from three.

The most recent of those was at the German 2000 Guineas three weeks ago.

So he is in form and match fit and looks as if he has the potential to go places as well.

MIGHTY ULYSSES is another in the St James’s Palace Stake betting lineup that looks as if he has a high ceiling.

Mighty Ulysses, who is from the Gosdens, is not without a chance either after a runner-up at the Silver Bowl.

He was under a loss of pressure from the weight in that one. But form from that Haydock run has been franked.

Mighty Ulysses comes up all the way from a handicap to a Group 1 on Tuesday, but his yard has a decent record in this.

St James’s Palace Stakes Favourites – Royal Ascot betting

Favourites have trended well in recent editions of this race.

So that’s something to consider for the 2022 St James’s Place Stakes betting.

Last year’s winner was the 7/2F Poetic Flare, making it five favourites in the last ten renewals to get to the line first.

That’s good news for this year’s apparently dominant favourite Coroebus at 4/6* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

Given what has transpired across the last decade of this Royal Ascot race, it doesn’t look like it is worth digging too far down the market.

The longest-priced winner in the last 10 renewals of the St James’s Palace was Circus Maximum at 10/1 in 2019.

St James’s Palace Stakes Trends

In the last 20 renewals of this big Group 1 race, there have been 11 winners from British trainers and 9 from Irish trainers.

Two of the last three have been from Ireland.

There is no age trend here of course with only 3-year-old colts getting a run out in the St James’s Palace Stakes.

With that in mind, to pull together some St James’s Palace stakes tips 2022, we are going to jump into the trainer and jockey statistics.

St James’s Palace Stakes Trends Royal Ascot

  • None of the last 20 winners have been above 10/1
  • Each of the last 20 winners were inside the top six in the betting market
  • 100% of the last 20 winners has not been bigger than 12/1 last time out
  • The last run for each of the last 20 winners had gone between 1m and 1m 4f
  • All but two of the last 20 renewals were won by one that had ran a Group 1 last time out
  • 18 of the last 20 editions have been won by a horse that had previously won at least a Listed race
  • All but two of the last 20 winners had previously contested a Group 1

St James’s Palace Stakes Trainer & Jockey Trends

There is a clear trainer trend to consider for St James’s Palace Stakes tips 2022.

That is the presence of Aiden O’Brien.

He has won six of the last 20 renewals of the Group 1 fixture, including two of the last seven.

The most recent victory for O’Brien was with Circus Maximus at 10/1.

The trainer has one entry for this year’s renewal and teams up with jockey Ryan Moore for Aikhal who is a current 33/1 quote* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

The only other trainer to have won more than once in the last 20 renewals of the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot is Jim Bolger.

The Irish trainer holds an entry with Wexford Native.

Onto the jockey trends and this is an exciting area to size up.

Frankie Dettori has been the most successful rider in the last two decades of the race, claiming three wins from 15 rides.

He goes on Godolphin’s Mighty Ulysses as a decent 12/1 contender* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

Ryan Moore, James Doyle and Kevin Manning have all won the fixture twice in the last 20 renewals of the race.

For the 2022 renewal, they are with Aikhal, Berkshire Shadow and Wexford Native respectively.

St James’s Palace Stakes Tips & Predictions Royal Ascot 2022

This is an intriguing renewal of the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot 2022.

Some unknown qualities are knocking around here.

But at the top of the market, COROEBUS looks to be in a class of his own. If he runs true to form then he is going to be so hard to stop.

The form from the 2000 Guineas clearly puts him heavily in the frame for further success.

it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him take Group 1.

Another on the shortlist for the St James’s Palace Stakes tips is MALJOOM at 12/1 who ticks some boxes nicely* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

His performance in the German 2000 Guineas was excellent and has rapidly been on the up.

Maljoom looked so good coming from off the pace in that one.

The final selection in St James’s Palace stakes tips is MIGHTY ULYSSES. He is just fascinating here as he makes a huge jump up to Group 1.

Form from the Silver Bowl has been boosted and form a yard that knows what it takes to win this race.

The booking of Dettori is also a huge boost and is full of intrigue at 12/1* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at Paddy Power).
