Acomb Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

The first stone for the Acomb Stakes preview 2022 is a look at the performances from favourites over the recent editions. In this contest for 2-year-olds, there have been just two favourites delivering the odds in the last ten renewals.

Those were in 2012 by DUNDONNELL and then in 2014 by RECORDER. So that is a sequence of six renewals without the favourite having gotten on the board. Only in half of the last six editions of the Acomb, has the race favourite been inside the top three.

Extending things back to the last renewals of the Acomb, the race favourite has been in the top three in fourteen times (including joint-favourites). Six winners in the last 20 renewals were a favourite.

The current favourite for the 2022 Acomb betting is NOSTRUM at 5/2* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Coral).

Longer-priced winners at the Acomb

Last year’s winner of the Acomb was a 25/1 outsider ROYAL PATRONAGE. He got the score from trainer Mark Johnston on the day. That was the fifth winner in the last ten renewals to get the victory at a quote of double figures.

Royal Patronage was the longest-priced winner in that span. Four of the last six Acomb winners have won from at least a quote of 9/1.

About the Acomb Stakes

The first edition of the Acomb Stakes was hosted in 1948, the race taking its name from an area of the city of York. In 1998 the race was lifted to the Listed level and then eight years later it was boosted to Group 3.

Because the race is only for juveniles, it piques a lot of interest. That is because it often produces future Group 1 contenders. It’s not uncommon for good performers from the Acomb to be seen in the Classics the following year.

There are conditions on the race, with fillies getting a 3lb allowance, while former Group winners do have to carry a penalty into the race.

The all-time leading jockey at the Acomb is Lester Piggott who took a total of 10 winners. The top trainers in the Acomb since 1986 are Sir Michael Stoute and Mark Johnston, who have both seen four winners get home.

Acomb Stakes contenders – 17th August 2022

The Acomb features 2-year-olds only, who are just finding their way into their careers. So it’s rare that entries appear having had more than two previous racetrack appearances.

For the 2022 Acomb betting renewal one of the potential big players is Sir Micahel Stoutes’ NOSTRUM at 5/2* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Coral). He made a positive impression, winning his debut comfortably at Sandown in July. Jockey Ryan Moore stays with the ride for the York run.

LOCAL DYNASTY could be another of the key players. Charlie Appleby’s juvenile made a good impression getting off the mark at the first time of asking. He took a wide-margin score at Newmarket earlier this month.

Colt DEFENCE OF FORT pulled out a debut win by almost five lengths when on display at Ascot in early July. That was an eye-catching run, outrunning some big odds on the day. Others to keep an eye on in Acomb betting 2022 include HECTIC, HANS ANDERSEN and MILL STREAM all of which bring solid claims.

Acomb Stakes Trends Ebor Festival 2022

For the next part of this Acomb Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 3  fixture.

Acomb Stakes Trainer Statistics

In the last 20 renewals of the Acomb, it is Mark Johnston who has led the way in the trainer statistics. It’s four victories that he has posted from 18 entries. He is back in the fray this year, saddling LOYAL TOUCH a current 16/1 ante-post outsider, who is still a maiden.

There are four other trainers in that span, who have won the race twice before. Those are Kevin Ryan, Charles Hill, Brain Meehan and William Haggas. The latter of those is the only one with a 2022 entry, with LORD BERTIE in play at 10/1* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Coral).

Interestingly, Aiden O’Brien has had 14 entries in the last 20 renewals of the Acomb and has failed to produce a winner of all that.

Acomb Stakes Jockey Statistics

Moving on to the jockey statistics for the Acomb, two names stand out. The only two riders that have won the race more than once in that spell are Jamie Spencer and James Doyle.

Spencer is the leader with three victories from just four rides, producing a fantastic strike rate. His most recent victory in the race was in 2018 on the back of Charles Hills’ Phoenix Of Spain. Doyle’s tally stands at two, his victories coming in 2012 and 2013 on Dundonnell and Too Fast respectively.

Other Key Acomb Stakes Trends

  • Each of the last 20 Acomb winners were from the top six in the market
  • None of the last winners had been a runner-up on their debut
  • A ran of at least 6f was had on the debut of the last 20 winners
  • None of the last 20 renewals was won by a horse that was bigger than 20/1 on their debut.
  • Avoid Ireland and France debut
  • Avoid Ireland/Wales last time out
  • All but one of the last 20 winners had scored after a break of at least 18 days
  • All but one of the last 20 Acomb victors were a colt
  • Between 1-3 appearances on turf had been made by 19 of the last 20 winners.

Acomb Stakes 2021 Review

The Acomb Stakes 2021 was won by ROYAL PATRONAGE from a quote of 25/1 SP. It was a margin by more than two lengths as well in a commanding run. Mark Johnston’s juvenile had just made it all in the race and started to really stamp authority a couple of furlongs from home.

Runner-up IMPERIAL FIGHTER was nowhere near the winner. He had pulled into the second spot a furlong out, but just had no answer to the front-runner. DUBAWI LEGEND, the 7/4F for the race, came home third, not having anything inside the final furlong to make any bigger impact.
