The big race on the opening day of the Ebor Festival 2022 is the Group 1 Juddmonte International. This feels like an extra special edition of the renewal as well as the great BAAEED is taking a place in the line-up.

The unbeaten star is moved up to the 10f trip for the first time in his career. Will he handle the extra distance?

The presence of Baaeed, who has gone from strength to strength this season, adds a fascinating dimension to this year’s Juddmonte International renewal.

Our betting experts size up some of the racing trends for the fixture, as well as look back through some history. We will also take a look through the latest ante-post odds for Juddmonte International betting 2022.

Juddmonte International Favourites and Outsiders

The Juddmonte is the showpiece fixture of the opening day of the Ebor Festival 2022. To start digging into this Group 1 spectacle we look at the favourites. What has been the return of winning favourites in the last 10 renewals?

The race has churned out plenty of winning favourites in the last decade of action. Five of the last ten Juddmonte renewals have been won by the favourite on the day. That includes the last two years.

So it has been a common feature. Will there be a third consecutive winning favourite?

There may well be, because the 2022 Juddmonte features the brilliant BAAEED who is the current 2/5 odds-on favourite* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365).

Two of the last five winning favourites were odds-on favourites. Those were Frankel back in 2012 and Australia in 2014. None of the last three winning favourites has been odds-on.

Looking at the longer odds of the winner of the Juddmonte International in the last ten renewals, there is one big outlier. That’s ARABIAN QUEEN who outran 50/1 odds in 2015 for trainer David Elsworth and jockey Silvestre De Sousa.

That’s the one one in the last ten renewals who have delivered the Juddmonte score by double figures. Arabian Queen is only one of two winners in the last ten to have scored from bigger than 5/1.

About the Juddmonte International Stakes

While the race is commonly known as the Juddmonte, its name is the International Stakes. It’s known as the Juddmonte thanks to the long sponsorship of the fixture by Juddmonte Farms, which started more than 30 years ago.

This is a relatively newer race on the UK calendar. The inaugural edition was in 1972 and it is now the race with the biggest purse that is run at York Racecourse.

In the course of the International Stakes history, there are only three horses to have won it twice. Those were Dahlia (1974, 1975), Ezzoud (1993, 1994) and Halling (1995, 1996). There are joint leading jockeys.

With a victory on Authorized in 2007, Frankie Dettori equalled Lester Piggot’s long-standing record of five winners. With six victories each, Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien are the joint leading trainers in the history of the International Stakes.

The Juddmonte is a contest open to 3-year-olds and above, and fillies and mares claim a 3lb allowance for the fixture.

Juddmonte International contenders – 17th July 2022

BAAEED is the big player in the 2022 renewal of the Juddmonte at the Ebor Festival. His presence dominates that field. So much so that he is the 2/5 odds-on favourite* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365).

Trained by Willie Haggas, Baaeed has not put a foot wrong in his career. He has moved on to nine wins from nine appearances and is just about as good as it gets.

Baaeed has nailed the Lockinge Stakes, the Queen Anne Stakes and the Qatar Sussex Stakes this season (all Group 1). That’s five straight victories that Baaeed has produced at the top level currently.

Interestingly Baaeed comes up to the 10f trip for the first time in his career. He’s a specialist 1-miler.

Will that create a crack for any of the other contenders to sneak through?

Last year’s Juddmonte winner MISHRIFF is a 7/2 second-favourite currently in the ante-post* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365). He smashed last year’s International Stakes field at York by six lengths.

Mishriff has followed the same path to this year’s Juddemonte as he did the last term. That is defeats in the Coral-Eclipse and King George VI And Queen Elizabeth fixtures.

Again, the presence of Baaeed is really creating an uneven market for Juddmonte betting. Among the others who could get into the frame for the places, there is NATIVE TRAIL and ALENQUER.

Juddmonte International Trends Ebor Festival 2022

For the next part of this Juddmonte International Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 1 fixture.

Juddmonte International Trainer Statistics

The leading trainer in the Juddmonte International Stakes from the last 20 renewals is Aiden O’Brien. He has posted 5 winners in that period, recorded from 33 entries into the races.

O’Brien is holding two entries for the Juddmonte 2022. Those are outsider chances with HIGH DEFINITION and POINT LONSDALE at 25/1 and 33/1 respectively* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365).

The most recent win that O’Brien has taken in the International Stakes was with Japan in 2019. The other only trainer with more than one victory in that spell is Sir Micahel Stoute who has scored twice. The most recent win for him came with Ulysses in 2017.

Last year’s winning yard, John & Thady Gosden are sending Mishriff back in for a title defence. Mishriff is a current 7/2 selection in the Juddmonte International Stakes betting* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365).

Juddmonte International Jockey Statistics

For the jockey statistics in the last twenty renewals, the joint most successful riders are Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore. They have taken two wins each. Moore’s success happened in 2006 on Notnowcato and then more recently in 2019 on Japan.

The scores for Dettori were a while ago. They came for him in 2004 on Sulamani and in 2007 on Authorized.

Other Key Juddmonte International Trends

In the last ten renewals of the Juddmonte, there have been four 3-year-old and four 4-year-olds winners, along with two 5-year-olds getting a score.

  • The favourite has been inside the opp three in each of the last fifteen renewals
  • Each of the last 20 winners had placed preciously in Group 1
  • At least two previous starts at this level had been made by each of the last 20 winners
  • Between 3 & 12 career wins had been taken by the last 20 Juddmonte winners
  • Each of the 20 winners had claimed between one and four wins in the last 12 months
  • A trip of no longer than 1m 4f had been taken by any of the last 20 winners
  • All but one of the last 20 winners came from the first 4 of the mark
  • A victory at least in Group 2 had been recorded by 19 of the last 20 winners
  • Only one of the last 20 winners hadn’t run in a Group 1 last time out
  • Ignore equipment (1/20)

Juddmonte International 2021 Review

MISHRIFF was the dominant force in last year’s renewal of the Juddmonte International Stakes. He was the 9/4F for John & Thady Gosden in 2021. The 4-year-old kept a nice pace behind the leaders for a fair chunk of the race.

He was taken forward around 3f from home and was clear when two out. There was no catching him from that point and he eased back at the finish, still winning by six lengths.

ALENQUER was never going to get close to Midriff but did enough to card a runner-up spot from an 8/1 SP. He was given an excellent ride by Tom Marquand, retaking second place inside the final furlong.

The well-supported LOVE came home third, getting undone at the start. She did pull herself back to the contest, but never totally looked settled, hanging right. Love had little more to give for winning purposes inside the final furlong.
