Great Voltigeur Favourites and Outsiders

We get into the Great Voltigeur preview for the Ebor Festival 2022 by taking a look back at the last 10 years. That’s to examine how race favourites have performed on the day.

It is a race that has had its fair share of winning favourites in that spell.

Five of the last ten renewals of the Great Voltigeur have been won by the favourite on the day. The most recent one to get to the line first was LOGICIAN in 2019 for trainer John Gosden, ridden by Frankie Dettori.

The stats do point punters towards the head of the market. The favourite has been in the top three in 16 of the previous 20 renewals.

The last three winning favourites have all been odds-on as well. So that’s something to consider in Great Voltigeur betting 2022.

We are looking at ante-post odds for the Great Voltigeur here, but this year’s current favourite is SECRET STATE at 7/4* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Coral).

Winning Favourites in the last 10 renewals

  • 2017 Cracksman 4/6F
  • 2016 Idaho 5/6F

PYLEDRIVER won the 2020 renewal from a 10/1SP. That’s the longest-priced winner of the race in the last ten renewals. Only three of the last Great Voltigeur winners were bigger than 6/1.

About the Great Voltigeur

The Great Voltigeur Stakes was introduced onto the scene in 1950. The name of the race comes from a horse who was from Yorkshire. Voltigeur won both the Derby and the St Leger in 1950.

Talking of the St Leger, the Great Voltigeur at York is the big feeder race for that one. So it’s an important fixture on the calendar. There have been numerous horses that have completed the double of the Great Voltigeur and the St Leger.

The most recent of those was LOGICIAN in 2019. The Group 2 race, which is exclusively for 3-year-olds colts and geldings, sees former Group 2 and Group 1 winners carry a penalty.

Great Voltigeur contenders – 17th August 2022

We are still well inside the ante-post market for Great Voltiguer betting 2022. Some of the entries still need to be supplemented as we scan through the field. SECRET STATE is the current 7/4 favourite* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Coral).

The son of Dubawi is certainly carrying some cracking form this season. After a runner-up spot on his debut, Secret State has since won all four runs, including having gotten the better of some of these including Deauville Legend.

DEAUVILLE LEGEND does appear to be on the right track and won a Group 3 in July. That was after being narrowly defeated by Secret State at Ascot. A second-place finish in another Group 3 in late July makes Deauville Legend a potential threat.

Another of the key players in the Great Voltigeur 2022 could be WALK OF STARS, a stablemate of Secret State. He produced a career-best to take a place finish at Newmarket by a neck in July, a race narrowly won by Deauville Legend in a tight finish.

It’s going to be worth watching the market for entries and supplements. Others that could come into play include FRANCESCO CLEMENTE, CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD and AIKHAL.

Great Voltigeur Trends Ebor Festival 2022

For the next part of this Great Voltigeur Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Grade 1 fixture.

Great Voltigeur Trainer Statistics

The leading trader in the last 20 renewals is John Gosden, who has produced 5 winners from 11 entries. The most recent of his scores came with the odds-on 2019 favourite LOGICIAN.

Three other trainers have won the race on more than one occasion in the last 20 renewals. Those are Charlie Appleby, Aiden O’Brien and Sir Michael Stoute.

The strike rate of Charlie Appleby is notable as his two victories have been produced by just six entries. Those two wins have also been inside the last four renewals, so is a trainer to keep an eye on.

Great Voltigeur Jockey Statistics

A good approach for the Great Voltigeur betting is to look for winning pairings of jockeys and trainers. For the jockey side of that, the most successful rider in the last 20 renewals is Frankie Dettori.

He has scored 4 times from 14 previous rides in the race during that period. He was on the back of the 2019 winner Logician. James Doyle is the only other jockey to have won the race twice in the last 20 renewals. Doyle’s two wins have come in the last four renewals, riding for Charlie Appleby.

Other Key Great Voltigeur Trends

  • 19 of the last 20 winners had been within the first five on their debut
  • Each of the last 20 winners was on the turf for their debut
  • The winners of the last 20 renewals had all placed between 1m 2f and 1m 5f
  • Was carrying 1225-133lb on their last win
  • Between 2-9 career starts had been made by the last 20 winners
  • All but two of the last 20 Great Voltigeur winners had been no bigger than 8/1 last time out
  • Only two of the last 20 winners had been beyond 1m 4 1/2f before

Great Voltigeur 2021 Review

YIBIR took the 2022 Great Voltigeur renewal for trainer Charlie Appleby, ridden by James Doyle. Yibir had been a strong 6/1 player in the field. He was ridden patiently, after being held up in the rear in the early stages.

But from 2f out, the room was there to make the move and Doyle pushed him on. Yibir took the lead 1f out and ran on well to finish.

He was a furlong and a quarter ahead of second-place finisher THE MEDITERRANEAN, a longer 16/1 SP player. He was keen and competitive throughout the fixture and briefly touched the front.

The Mediterranean was still going well at the finish, but just no match for Yibir.

Taking third place was YOUTH SPIRIT with Tom Marquand in the saddle. He was in the mix early only but started to lose headway 3f from home.

But there was a response from him and did enough to scrap third place by a nose ahead of SIR LUCAN.
