Lowther Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

The first section of the Lowther Stakes preview examines the performances of the recent favourites from renewals of this York race. This is one of the big feature races on the second day of the York Ebor Festival.

This race is only for 2-year-old fillies and so we are looking for some exciting juvenile talent. Have there been winning favourites appearing in recent editions? In the last 10 renewals, there have been only three winning favourites.

Those were Lucky Kristale in 2013, Tiggy Wiggy in 2014 and more recently Fairyland in 2018. None of those winners was odds-on favourites on the day. It has now been three renewals of the Lowther Stakes without a winning favourite having been produced.

Things have swung a little bit the other way recently. Each of the last three Lowther Stakes has been at least 6/1 SP prices. ZAIN CLAUDETTE got the win last year from a quote of 6/1.

Looking at the wider picture, the favourite has finished in the top three in seven of the last eight renewals.

In each of the last three renewals, the race favourite has come home in second place.

The longest-priced winner in the last 10 Lowther Stakes renewals at the York Ebor Festival, was Living In The Past in 2019. She landed the score at a 12/1 SP, outrunning some big odds.

However, he is just one of three winners in the last ten renewals that have scored at 6/1 or larger.

About the Lowther Stakes

The Lowther Stakes was introduced in 1946 at York, named after the 5th Earl of Lonsdale (Hugh Lowther). This is an important race on the calendar for the fillies. The bigger target following on from this is the Cheveley Park Stakes.

The leading trainer in this history of the race is Richard Hannon Sr, who has banked five victories. The most recent of those was back in 2011.

From the leading jockey records, there are four sat on three wins each. Those are Harry Carr, Ron Hutchinson, Lester Piggott and more up-to-date, Richard Hughes.

Former Group winners will carry a 3lb penalty in the Lowther Stakes.

Lowther Stakes contenders – 18th August 2022

Again, these are juvenile competitors in the Lowther Stakes, which means that there is not a lot of form to browse through.

But one player who is coming in hot is DRAMATISED who has won both appearances so far. Those were warm contests at Newmarket and then on a big step up to Group 2 at Ascot in mid-June.

Dramatised is the current 6/5 ante-post favourite at the head of the Lowther Stakes* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365).

LEZOO has won three of her four appearances, really having looked highly progressive. It has been back-to-back Group victories by her, having delivered the odds as the favourite in both.

MEDITATE brings unbeaten form to the table from three runs. She opened her account in a Curragh maiden.

She was then pitched in to back to back Group 3 contests following that, performing well. Meditate had the beating of Mawj at Ascot in the Group 3 Albany Stakes last time out.

The only loss that MAWJ has suffered in three appearances was that Ascot loss to Meditate. She showed good character to produce a revival to score at Newmarket in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, finishing half a length clear of Lezoo.

This is a good competitive line-up. Longer-priced options for Lowther Stakes betting include CAN TO CAN, MATILDA PICOTTE and SWEET HARMONY.

Lowther Stakes Trends Ebor Festival 2022

For the next part of this Lowther Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 2 fixture at the Ebor Festival.

Lowther Stakes Trainer Statistics

There have been two trainers from the last 20 renewals of the Lowther Stakes to have won the race twice. They are William Haggas and Mick Channon. The wins for Haggas came with Rosdhu Queen in 2012 and Besharah in 2015. Mick Channon’s wins came in 2001 and 2005.

Lowther Stakes Jockey Statistics

The leading jockeys in the last 20 years of the Lowther Stakes are Jamie Spencer and James Doyle. They have both ridden home two winners. The wins for Spencer came in 2007 and 2016.

Doyle’s victories have been much more recent. He got off the mark in 2017 on Threading, before adding to his tally in 2020 on Miss Amulet.

The 2019 winner of the Lowther Stakes was Living In The Past ridden by Daniel Tudhope for trainer Karl Burke.

That is the pairing who are leading the charge in 2022 Lowther Stakes betting with DRAMATISED at 6/5* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365)

Other Key Lowther Stakes Trends

In the last 20 renewals of the Lowther Stakes, 18 of the winners have come from British trainers. The other two in that sequence were from Ireland.

Lowther Stakes 2021 Review

ZAIN CLAUDETTE landed the 2021 renewal of the Lowther Stakes, finishing a length clear at the finish. Ridden by Ray Dawson for trainer Ismail Mohammed, Zain Claudette timed things to perfection.

She got to the front a furlong from home. Despite drifting left, she ran on well to clear the line.

SANDRINE who was the 6/5F for the race didn’t have the cleanest of starts in the contest. But she gained momentum and was asked for more 1f from home.

She did make up a place inside the final furlong but could do nothing about the winner.

The third-placed finished last year was DESERT DREAMER, a couple a length back of Sandrine. Desert Dreamer was well in touch with the leaders a couple of furlongs from home.

She was still in it 1f from home. But there was a wobble with equipment troubles and did all that she could to just hang on for third.
