In this Lonsdale Cup preview, our betting experts take a look through the ante-post odds of Ebor Festival 2022 betting.

We also look at the key trends to study ahead of racing betting and look at some race history.

Lonsdale Cup Favourites and Outsiders

We kick off this Lonsdale Cup 2022 preview with a look at the records produced by race favourites.

It is the last ten renewals of the fixture that we are studying for trends.

Last year’s winner was the race favourite. It was a massively popular winner too, as the great Stradivarius claimed the victory.

The great stayer was a 4/6 odds-on favourite on the day.

The victory also strengthened a recent trend of favourites coming out on top in the Lonsdale Cup.

It was the fourth consecutive renewal that had been won by the SP FAV. So that’s a big trend.

In total, five of the last ten renewals of the Group 2 contest have gone the way of the favourite.

That could spell good news for this year’s current ante-post favourite, which is again, Stradivarius at even money* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Unibet).

Looking a little deeper into the finishing positions of favourites in the Lonsdale Cup, it does indicate that it may be worth looking towards the head of the market.

The favourite has been inside the top three in 16 of the last 20 renewals of the fixture.

Longer-priced Lonsdale Cup winners

In the last ten renewals, there have been a couple of winners get home in double figures. In 2012 TIMES UP scored from an 11/1 SP.

That was bettered by the longer odds of 16/1 that 2017 winner MONTALY notched up. The 2017 Lonsdale Cup was the last time that the favourite didn’t win the fixture.

Ebor Festival 2022 Lonsdale Cup Odds

While we can take a look at the ante-post Lonsdale Cup odds for 2022, the market will likely take on a different complexion closer to the start of the Festival.

When the final declarations for the Lonsdale Cup, which happens 48 hours out, are in, punters will know exactly who is going to the start.

For now, here is a list of current Lonsdale Cup odds taken at the time of writing.

Stradivarius Even Money
Trueshan 2/1
Coltrane 2/1
Tashkhan 7/1
Quickthorn 8/1
Enemy 16/1
Reshoun 25/1
Mostly Cloudy 33/1
Nate The Great 40/1

About the Lonsdale Cup

The Lonsdale Cup was pushed up to Group 3 level in 1998. It’s a 2m contest at York, which is always one of the most popular divisions in flat racing.

Having been known as the Lonsdale Stakes, the name of the race was changed to the Lonsdale Cup in 2004.

That was the same year that the fixture was moved up a notch to Group 2 status.

This is an important race on the calendar towards the end of the season.

It’s common to see the big contenders from it go on to feature in September’s Doncaster Cup.

The race is open to 3-year-olds and above, with fillies and mares receiving a 3lb allowance.

Former Group 1 winners have to deal with a 3lb penalty in the race.

Lonsdale Cup contenders – 19th August 2022

This year’s renewal of the Lonsdale Cup looks fiercely competitive. But there is a familiar name at the head of the ante-post betting market.

That’s Stradivarius at evens* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Unibet).

The great 2-miler has won the race three times before. That makes him the all-time leading horse in the history of the Lonsdale Cup.

While he has shown signs of growing vulnerabilities over the last couple of seasons, on his day he is still one of the best in the division.

He’s just never easy to write off and was only beaten by a neck in the Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) back in July.

Stradivarius will likely meet his old rival TRUESHAN in the Lonsdale Cup if everything goes to plan.

Trueshan is a current 2/1 quote in the ante-post market for Lonsdale Cup betting* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Unibet).

He is a high-class performer. While throughout his career, Trueshan’s been unfortunate to run into Stradivarius so many times, it wouldn’t be a surprise to the 6-year-old to have his day.

Another of the big ante-post dangers in the Lonsdale Cup 2023 ante-post market is COLTRANE. He is on the up in the division for trainer Andrew Balding.

Having landed the Coral Marathon in the Spring and put in a credible fourth-place finish in the Goodwood Cup Stakes, Coltrane is expected to launch a bold bid at York.

Other contenders coming in from longer ante post odds are TASHKHAN and QUICKTHORN, while ENEMY could offer some each-way claims.

Lonsdale Cup Trends Ebor Festival 2022

For the next part of this Lonsdale Cup Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 2 fixture.

Lonsdale Cup Trainer Statistics

John Gosden has been the most successful trainer in the Lonsdale Cup over the last 20 renewals. He has scored three times in that period. They were all with Stradivarius and the pairing is back again for another bid in 2022.

Gosden is the only trainer with more than one victory in the contest over the last two decades. Of the trainers with the three runners at the head of the 2022 market, Andrew Balding (Coltrane) has won it once before with Montaly in 2017. Alan King (Trueshan) is seeking his first success.

Lonsdale Cup Jockey Statistics

Helped along by taking rides on the back of Stradivarius, Frankie Dettori is the leading jockey in the Lonsdale Cup over the last 20 renewals. He has claimed seven victories during that period.

He is the only rider to have won it on more than one occasion in that sequence. Dettori has won four of the last seven renewals of the Lonsdale Cup.

The last jockey to win the York race that wasn’t Dettori, was Jim Crowley in 2020 on the back of favourite Embihaar.

Other Key Lonsdale Cup Trends

The key race to look at for form ahead of the Lonsdale Cup is the Goodwood Cup. It’s a very similar contest with a lot of the same players taking part. Nine of the last fifteen winners of the Lonsdale Cup had appeared in the Goodwood Cup last time out.

Of the last 20 renewals of the Lonsdale Cup, 17 of the winners were from British trainers, and the other three were from Ireland.

  • None of the last 20 winners were bigger than 16/1
  • At least 1-3 starts had been made in the previous 90 days by the winners of each of the last 20 renewals
  • None of the last 20 winners were more than 16/1 last time out
  • The last win recorded was between 1m2f – 2m2½f
  • Each of the last 20 renewals of the Lonsdale Cup had the winner from the first 7 in the market
  • At least 3 turf wins has been taken by the winners of the last 20 renewals
  • The last win had come in a field of at least 7 runners by 18 of the last 20 winners
  • 18 of the last 20 Lonsdale Cup winners had had fewer than 6 starts at the distance

Lonsdale Cup 2021 Review

STRADIVARIUS was back in the winner’s circle at the 2021 Lonsdale Cup. That was his third success in the race.

He had gone off as the 4/6 FAV in the contest. He found himself in a battle with SPANISH MISSION throughout the contest.

That rival just wasn’t prepared to let Stradivarius have things all his own way. A couple of furlongs from home, they were still scrapping it out.

But in the closing 110 yards, that is when Stradivarius just stamped his authority.

He went flat out to the line and just took the race by a head. It was a thrilling climax in a spectacular duel with Spanish Mission. The two of those were well ahead of anyone else in the field.

THE GRAND VISIR took third in the contest from a big 28/1SP.

He was pushed on well by jockey Richard Kingscote a couple of furlongs from home but was no match for the front two.
