One of a handful of Group contests on the penultimate day of the Ebor Festival 2022 is the Gimcrack Stakes. This exciting Group 2 is a sprint over a 6f trip. It features only juveniles and it warms up the York crowd nicely ahead of the Nunthorpe.

Our betting experts take a look at the latest ante-post odds for this year’s renewal of the Gimcrack Stakes. We also take a look at some trends for the race, one of the outstanding fixtures of the Ebor Festival 2022.

Gimcrack Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

One of the top fixtures from York’s Ebor Festival, the Gimcrack pulls plenty of support from punters. In the last ten years, how have the race day favourites fared in their respective bids to deliver the odds?

There have been three winning favourites in the last ten renewals of the Gimcrack. Two of those have been within the last three renewals.

THREAT scored in 2019 and was followed in 2020 when favourite MINZAAL got the job done.

The other favourite to win in the last 10 years was BLUE POINT back in 2016.

So there hasn’t been a heavy trend of wins by the market leader in recent renewals.

Fourteen of the last 23 favourites (including joint-favourites) across the last 20 editions have made it into the top three.

Looking ahead to the Gimcrack betting 2202, the current favourite in the ante-post odds is ROYAL SCOTSMAN at 5/2* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at 888Sport).

But he’s only a fairly narrow favourite with big contenders like MARSHMAN and NOBLE STYLE behind him.

Longer-priced winners

With only three winning favourites than in the last 10 Gimcrack renewals cropping up, does that mean longer-priced winners have had their day? Not really. Only one of the last 10 winners of the Group 2 contest has done so at double figures.

That was SANDS OF MALI who scored at 14/1 in 2017 for trainer Richard Fahey. None of the other winners in the decade span was bigger than 7/1.

About the Gimcrack Stakes

The Gimcrack is a popular 6f contest at the York Ebor Festival. Because it is only for 2-year-old entrants, it adds an extra layer of uncertainty.

With inexperienced youngsters, there’s generally not a lot of form to dig through. Therefore, breeding often comes into focus for picking Gimcrack betting tips.

The race is named after a thoroughbred racehorse who was foaled back in 1760. The small grey won 27 of 36 turf races.

The Gimcrack Stakes was inaugurated in 1846, so it has a rich history.

Up until 1987 the race was open to both sexes but was moved to just male juveniles.

The Gimcrack Stakes is a Group 2 contest on the straight at York Racecourse. Any Group 1 or Group 2 winners entering the fixture, will carry a 3lb penalty.

The most successful trainer in the history of the Gimcrack is William I’Anson, whose 7th victory was taken in 1903.

The leading jockey is also from the annals of history is John Osborne Jr. He won the race nine times, scoring his final win in 1880.

Later in this 2022 Gimcrack Stakes preview, we will bring things up to date. We will examine the trainer and jockey records from the most recent 20 renewals.

Gimcrack Stakes contenders – Friday, 19th August 2022

Heading up the market for the Gimcrack Stakes 2022 is ROYAL SCOTSMAN at 5/2* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at 888Sport).

He has made a positive start to his career with two wins in four racetrack appearances. The latest of those victories was in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

MARSHMAN will defend his unbeaten start, having won both appearances so far. He looks like another very promising prospect.

A massive 8-length victory at Thirsk in a novice contest in mid-August saw his claims for the Gimcrack raised.

Marshman is a joint 7/2 player in Gimcrack ante post odds along with NOBLE STYLE* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at 888Sport). The latter has also won both fixtures entered so far, both novice contests.

Another of the main players in the 2022 Gimcrack may be PERSIAN FORCE who brings a little more experience to the table than most.

Richard Hannon’s colt has already had five appearances winning three of those and taking a runner-up spot in the other two.

After a Group 2 win at Newmarket in July, he was pitched into a Group 1 at the Curragh.

Persian Force was a distant runner-up in the contest, but he should be stronger for the experience at the top level.

The likes of the undefeated CLEARPOINT and three-time winner THE ANTARCTIC also bring serious claims to the table.

The field goes deeper with the likes of AESOP’S FABLES, AL KARRAR, CHATEAU and CATCH THE PADDY all no bigger than 12/1 in current ante-post Gimcrack odds* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at 888Sport).

Gimcrack Stakes Trends Ebor Festival 2022

For the next part of this Gimcrack Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 2 fixture.

Gimcrack Stakes Trainer Statistics

As promised we now look at more current trainer statistics for the Gimcrack 2022 renewal. The leading trainer in the last 20 renewals is Kevin Ryan who has posted 4 victories. The most recent of those was with EMARAATY ANA in 2018.

Ryan’s hope for the 2022 Gimcrack is CATCH THE PADDY who will arrive seeking a hattrick from a current quote of 12/1* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at 888Sport).

The only two trainers to have won the race more than once that are in the mix for this year’s renewal are William Haggas (3) and Richard Hannon (2).

The latter, who won last year with LUSAIL, has the impressively progressive PERSIAN FORCE. Hannon has trained two of the last three Gimcrack winners so is a trainer to watch.

Gimcrack Stakes Jockey Statistics

Frankie Dettori, Paul Hanagan and Neil Callan are the only three riders who have won the Gimcrack twice in the last 20 renewals. Out of those, the most recent win was recorded by Dettori on Emaraaty Ana in 2018 for leading trainer Kevin Ryan.

The two wins recorded in the race by Hanagan and Callan were both done from six entries. Dettori’s two wins were from nine rides.

Other Key Gimcrack Stakes Trends

Each of the last 20 renewals has been won by a British trainer. What other Gimcrack trends have cropped up recently? Let’s take a look.

  • The last 20 renewals have been won by a horse whose highest win was not G3/LST/Cl2
  • None of the last 20 winners of the Gimcrack had been bigger than 16/1
  • The last 20 winners hadn’t been beaten by more than 3l last time out
  • A break of 12-48 days had been returned by each of the last 20 winners
  • None of the last 20 Grimack winners had been bigger than 28/1 during their career
  • The last 20 winners had attempted at least a 5½f trip
  • No geldings have won in the last 20 renewals
  • All but one of the last 20 Gimcrack winners came from the first six in the market

Gimcrack Stakes 2021 Review

From a strong 7/2 position in the Gimcrack betting market last year, LUSAIL landed the win. Trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by Pat Dobs, Lusail tracked the leaders until around 2f out.

He started to make his move a furlong from home, pulling out into the lead. One Lusil had moved to the front of the pack, he never looked like surrendering his advantage.

8/1 shot GIS A SUB finished over a length back of Lusail in second place. He was there pushing along 1f out. He did briefly get his nose in front and kept on well. Gis A Sub just lacked the finishing pace to stick with Lusail.

Taking the third spot less than a length back was TWILIGHT JET who outran odds of 18/1. He was anonymous for most of the race in midfield.

But started to put down his foot to put himself in the mix one furlong from home. Twilight Jet just lacked anything within the final 110 yards. But it was a run stacked with credit.
