Nunthorpe Stakes Details Ebor Festival 2022

Distance: 5f
Age: 2 year-olds plus
Entries: 35

Nunthorpe Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

The recent performances of favourites in the Nunthorpe Stakes are the first thing to take stock of.

That can help piece together some Nunthorpe trends ahead of the betting on the latest renewal of the fixture.

There have been three winning favourites in the last ten renewals of the Nunthorpe Stakes at the Ebor Festival.

The most recent of those was the 1/2 odds-on favourite BATTAASH in 2020.

The other winning favourites across the last ten renewals have been SOLE POWER in 2014 and ORTENSIA in 2012.

So there has not been a heavy Nunthrope trend when it comes to favourites. But what about a wider picture of Nunthorpe favourites.

11 of the last 21 favourites (including joint-favourites) across the last 20 renewals of the Nunthorpe Stakes have finished in the top three.

It’s happened just one in the last four renewals of the fixture.

Longer-priced winner in the Nunthorpe Stakes

At the other end of the scale, there have been some longer-priced winners that have outrun their odds in the Group 1 contest. Twice in the last decade, there have been 40/1 SP winners of the Nunthorpe.

Those were JWALA in 2013 and ALPHA DELPHINI in 2018.

Four of the last ten winners of the Nunthorpe have gotten the score from at least an 8/1 SP.

So that does offer some scope for looking down the market a little bit.

To back that up, each of the last 20 winners of the Nunthorpe Stakes came from the first 13 in the market.

So it’s been a race that has thrown up deeper surprises in horse racing betting.

The current market leader in the ante-post Nunthorpe Stakes odds is ROYAL ACLAIM.

He is currently trading at 6/4 having opened at 2/1* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

About the Nunthorpe Stakes

The name of the race comes from an area of York. The race, albeit at a lower grade, was introduced in 1903. But the race as it’s known today was in August 1922. The Nunthorpe does offer a little something special.

It accepts entries from 2-year-olds and up. So juveniles can take on their elders in the contest, which isn’t common in racing at all.

The most recent juvenile winner of the Nunthorpe was back in 2007 when KINGSGATE NATIVE upset the field.

The Nunthorpe is the only Group 1 contest in Great Britain that allows 2-year-old geldings to enter.

The race claimed its Group 1 status in 1984. It’s a 5f sprint down the straight at York Racecourse.

Fillies and mares get a 3lb allowance. 2-year-olds come in at a lower weight than the rest, while 3-year-olds come in lower than 4-year-olds and above.

The all-time leading jockey from Nunthorpe is Lester Pigott who wrote his way into the record books. His seventh victory in the York race came in 1978.

Ossie Bell is the all-time most successful trainer with five wins, the last of which was in 1937.

Later in this 2022 Nunthorpe Stakes racing preview, we will look at more current jockey and trainer statistics.

There have been two horses that have won the race three times. Those were Tage End (1928, 1929, 1930) and Sharpo (1980, 1981, 1982).

Notably, in the last seven renewals of the Nunthorpe, two horses have won back-to-back editions. MECCAS ANGEL won in 2015 and 2016, while the brilliant BATTAASH took the race in 2019 and 2020.

Neither holds an entry for the 2022 Nunthorpe renewal.

Nunthorpe Stakes contenders – 19th August 2022

Heading up the ante-post market for the 2022 Nunthorpe Stakes betting is ROYAL ACLAIM at 6/4* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

There has been steady progress by him, the 3-year-old having won all three appearances.

On a big step up to Listed level, scored by two lengths ahead of Mondammej at York in early July.

It was another commanding performance by the youngster, who looks to be going places for trainer James Tate.

THE PLATINUM QUEEN is the leading filly in the contest, her bid helped by an allowance. She has won three of four appearances.

She will head to York this week seeking a hattrick after scoring at this venue and then following up at Goodwood.

Both of those victories were by wide margins and The Platinum Queen looks as if she will pose a threat from 11/4* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

KHAADEM is the leading hope for former winning trainer Charles Hills. He is another that is seeking a hattrick in current form.

Khaadem has been on the up and has performed at Group levels. He scored a Group 3 at Newmarket in April, before taking his form forward with a Group 2 in the King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood. Both of those 5f successes were by a neck but give him a tremendous platform for better.

Other runners that are likely to feature strongly in the contest are HIGHFIELD PRINCESS, FLOTUS, last year’s runner-up EMARAATY ANA along with RAASEL.

Nunthorpe Stakes Trends Ebor Festival 2022

For the next part of this Nunthorpe Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 1 fixture.

Nunthorpe Stakes Trainer Statistics

Charles Hills, Michael Dods and Edward Lynam are the only three trainers to have seen two winners get home in the last 20 renewals. Charles Hill has taken his two inside the last three editions.

Those were with the hot ticket that was BATTAASH in 2019 and 20209. Michael Dods also won his two editions in back-to-back years with one horse, MECCAS ANGEL in 2015 and 2016.

For the 2022 Nunthorpe, Charles Hills fields one of the leading contenders in KHAADEM who is an 8/1 quote in ante-post betting* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

Looking at those trainers who have struggled to deliver, Kevin Ryan and Aiden O’Brien are notable. Ryan has had 21 previous entries in the Nunthorpe Stakes without a win. O’Brien is up to 12 entries without having taken the race.

Nunthorpe Stakes Jockey Statistics

The only two jockeys that have won the Nunthorpe twice in the last 20 renewals are Paul Mulrennan and Jim Crowley. The latter got both of his wins for trainer Charles Hills on Battaash. Mulrennan got his victories on Mecca’s Angel.

Last year’s winning jockey Silvestre De Sousa is booked for the ride of 10/1 shot FLOTUS for Simon & Ed Crisford* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

Among the notable jockeys who have had multiple attempts without success, there are Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori.

They have tackled the race 12 and 10 times respectively without having picked up a Nunthrope victory.

Other Key Nunthorpe Stakes Trends

In the last 20 renewals of the Nunthorpe Stakes, 17 of the winners have come from British trainers. Two of the other three were from Irish trainers and the other from Australia.

The 2021 winner WINTER POWER was the only 3-year-old to land the Nuthrope since 2011. In the last decade here’s how the age results have panned out.

Recent Nunthorpe Age Trends last 10 renewals

  • 3-year-olds – 1
  • 4 year-olds – 3
  • 5 year-olds – 2
  • 6-year-olds – 1
  • 7-year-olds – 3

Here are some more Nunthrope betting trends to size up ahead of Thursday’s renewal.

  • Each of the last 20 renewals was won by a horse that had won within the previous 5 stars
  • The 20 Nunthrope winners have come from the first 13 in the market
  • Between 1 and 5 placings for the season had been made by each of the last 20 winners
  • There was a top 2 finish recorded within the last 3 runs by all but one of the last 20 renewal winners
  • All but one of the last 20 winners had not been defeated by more than 4 1/2 lengths last time out
  • Only one of the last 20 renewals was won by a horse wearing equipment
  • All but one of the last 20 renewal winners had finished within the first six on their debut
  • 18 of the last 20 winner shad produced at least 3 previous wins on the turf

Nunthorpe Stakes 2021 Review

9/1 shot WINTER POWER got the score in the 2021 Nunthorpe Stakes, putting in a convincing finish to land the victory. The 3-year-old made her move under Silvestre De Sousa a couple of furlongs out. With 1f to go, he was well in control and pulling clear.

Winter Power was always going to hang on once in front in the contest. Second-placed finisher EMARAATY ANA could do nothing about him, even though she was ridden strongly at the finish.

She outran a big 40/1 SP to take the runner-up spot by half of a length from DRAGON SYMBOL. He always looked as if he was working hard to stay in touch, and while he was asked for a response from 2f out, he didn’t have anything more to offer.

The 9/4 race favourite SUESA, ridden by William Buick was unable to reach the leaders and came home form. Suesa had been held up a little in the early stages of the race.
